(Long Beach, NY) As part of the fourth annual RecruitNY statewide initiative, the Long Beach Fire Department will open its doors to area residents so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community. It has been a challenge for many fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Long Beach Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder numbers, so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents.

In conjunction with National Volunteer Week 2014, members of the Long Beach Fire Department will join volunteer fire departments all across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive. On Saturday, April 26th between the times of Noon and 4 P.M the department will raise public awareness about fire prevention, the need for volunteers, and highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter. The Open House and Family Day will be held in front of City Hall, in Kennedy Plaza, located at One West Chester Street, Long Beach, NY, 11561.

Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy a day of fire-related, fun filled activities for the entire family. A blood drive is planned to take place inside Fire Headquarters starting at 11am. At 1pm sharp the Long Beach Fire Department will announce its partnership with Trivirtus Solutions Group. Together, we will launch the Preparedness Project. Throughout the day there will be stations set up for visitors to try on firefighter gear, watch live demonstrations, play games, and participate in raffles. Recruiters will available to discuss the requirements and benefits of getting involved in the department and community.

“This is a unique opportunity for our neighbors to observe the excitement of being involved in the fire service. Our current members love what they do and we hope our recruitment day will inspire other residents to join our family,” says Fire Commissioner Scott Kemins.
