DA: Man Gets Probation for Cheating Contractor of $75K in Lido Beach Project

Man claimed his sister stole cash but actually used it for trips to Florida, fishing gear, meals at restaurants.

A Suffolk County man was sentenced to probation Thursday after he reportedly scammed a contractor on a project in Lido Beach, announced the Nassau County District Attorney's office.

Scott Brown, 51, of East Moriches, was sentenced to five years of probation on top of the full restitution he already paid. Brown pleaded guilty to second-degree grand larceny in January.

According to the DA, Brown pretended to be an authorized dealer for Western Window Systems to a local general contractor in 2012. The contractor agreed to pay Brown $75,000 to buy and install high-end windows for a home he was building in Lido Beach. Bank records showed that instead of using the cash for the project, he paid for fishing gear, trips to Florida, meals at restaurants, and other credit card payments.

Brown went on to claim his sister had stolen the money and would not pay back the contractor, who then contacted the DA's office for help.
