E. Atlantic Beach Man's Catamaran Capsizes on Reynolds Channel

LBFD rescues resident after he tried to retrieve other catamaran that went adrift.

An East Atlantic Beach resident was treated for hypothermia after his catamaran capsized on Reynolds Channel on Monday.

According to the Long Beach Fire Department, a man was on his catamaran in an effort to retrieve his other catamaran that had broken loose from his dock at his home on the bay, when the catamaran he was riding tipped over in the middle of the bay.

“He was able to partially swim and walk back to the area below his dock where he was met by members of the Long Beach Fire Department,” LBFD Commissioner Scott Kemins said of the man who he estimated is about 60 years old.

The man was treated for hypothermia at the scene and transported in stable condition to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway.

The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department and Atlantic Beach Rescue Unit assisted in the rescue.
