Hewlett Teen Charged with Stealing from Cars

16-year-old reportedly found with stolen property from nearby cars, cops said.

A Hewlett teen faces charges after Nassau County Police say he stole items reported missing from nearby cars.

Fourth Squad officers responded to Webster Street in Hewlett after a call about a suspicious male who was looking into cars.

While in the area, cops saw Joshua Mackay-Smith, 16, of Hewlett, "attempting to hide in a bush" on Hewlett Parkway, detectives reported. Cops found items that were reported missing inside two large backpacks the teen was holding, officers said. He was also found with 60 blue pills believed to be Xanax, cops said.

Mackay-Smith was arrested at the scene and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, three counts of petit larceny, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Joshua from Hewlett? Ya think his pop has a few bucks to spare for him so he need not break into cars? Or is he just flat out greedy?

Trust me I'm angry and disappointed whenever someone commits crime in my neighborhood. But this individual is also a member of our community and presumably his family resides in our community. Let's work on ways to prevent the crime instead of all bursting at the seams to criticize this teen. Unfortunately, Ed Mangano and Howard Kopel, in merging the Hewlett police precinct with the Elmont police precinct, have put both the Five Towns and Elmont communities in jeopardy. Let's wait to see what the circumstances are of this particular arrest before we jump the gun and label him a drug dealer.
