LBPD Officer Injured in Crash

Officer was struck by a car that blew a red light, reports state.

A Long Beach Police officer was hospitalized after his cruiser collided with a car that ran a red light, according to Newsday.

Cops said the officer, who has not been identified, drove west through the intersection of Broadway and Edwards Boulevard when a Mercedes Benz blew a red light and slammed into him, said the report.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m., reports said.

Photos obtained by Patch show the LBPD vehicle, a Chevrolet truck, had sustained serious frontal damage.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was not identified, passed a sobriety test, said the report. He was reportedly on his way home from a party at the Allegria Hotel and was transporting at least three other people, none of whom were seriously injured.

The officer, who is "in his 20s and previously was with the NYPD," was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center with "broken legs, knee caps, and hands," said Newsday. A police spokesperson added that the officer was "lucky to be alive," said the report.
