Long Beach FD Rescues Pedestrian From Sinkhole

Emergency responders on several rescue calls during storm.

The Long Beach Fire Department had already answered nearly 20 calls Friday afternoon as Tropical Storm Andrea dumped several inches of rain across Long Island.

Chief Antonio Cuevas said the majority of calls were motorists stranded in high waters.

"We have firefighters removing them from [their] cars and bringing them to higher ground," he said.

One call, however, was for a pedestrian stuck nearly waist-deep in a sinkhole at Roosevelt and Park Avenue.

"Construction is being done in that area and all the water pretty much washed away the sand," Cuevas said.

The pedestrian was not injured and firefighters were able to pull him out.

While waters appear to be receding, Cuevas said, several blocks that run perpendicular to Park Avenue are closed due to severe flooding.
