Man Shot in North Park; Police Have Person of Interest

A man was shot on the streets of North Park in Long Beach late Saturday evening, when more than 30 bullets were fired and several homes and cars hit.

According to Long Beach Police Department, at about 11:55 p.m. on Nov. 2, officers received a call about a male subject that had been shot, and on arrival at the scene they found a man lying in the road outside 1 Sycamore Ct., located about two blocks behind LBPD headquarters and City Hall.

“Officers attempted to get information from those individuals standing nearby but they all claimed to have seen nothing,” the LBPD said in a statement about the incident that was released at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The officers that responded to the scene transported the male subject to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police stated. Lt. Eric Cregeen, an LBPD spokesman, told Patch that the subject was a 26-year-old male from Inwood. 

After LBPD established a crime scene, police discovered multiple shell casings of varying calibers in the roadway at National Boulevard and West Fulton Street, which is in the area of where the wounded man was found.

“Two rifles believed to be used in the incident were recovered on West Fulton Street,” the police stated.

Cregeen told Patch the 31 shell cases were recovered, and that during the shooting two cars and two homes were hit with bullets, but no one was injured. 

The LBPD notified Nassau County Police Department and detectives responded to the scene. “The police currently have a person of interest and the investigation is ongoing at this time,” Long Beach police stated.  

Asked about the person of interest, or any other suspect or suspects that may have been involved in the shooting, Cregeen said that there is only one subject at this time but the investigation remains open.

“We can only confirm one person shot and that was the person we found in front of 1 Sycamore Court,” he said.

The police statement said that LBPD Commissioner Michael Tangney “would like to remind residents that while shootings are dramatically down and overall crime is down 12 percent, we still need the public to be vigilant and immediately call 911 to report suspicious activity.”
