Police have identified the man who was struck by a car and died Friday in Long Beach.

Sean McCarthy, 50, of Long Beach, was struck by an oncoming car driven by an unidentified 60-year-old man, reported Nassau County Police. The car, a 1988 Chevrolet Corvette, was heading west on Park Avenue as McCarthy was walking near Maple Boulevard, cops said.

The accident happened at 5:50 a.m. Friday, officials confirmed.

McCarthy suffered "serious head injuries" and was rushed to South Nassau Communities Hospital for emergency treatment, police reported. Hospital staff pronounced him dead at 8:57 a.m.

Detectives said they do not suspect any criminality and impounded the vehicle for brake tests.

A Meal Train was established for the McCarthy family for donations here.

Does anyone know when the police report becomes public information? For those of us who love near that intersection and cross it daily there are things we need to know to prevent what has happened to the McCarthy family from happening again. The facts must be known by the public to push for what ever changes need to be made.

A police report, minus perhaps certain witness statements is always public information. It can be withheld for a period of time if confidentiality is necessary for the course of an investigation.
