Police are searching for thieves who reportedly stole a bell that was dedicated to victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.
Fourth Squad detectives said that the 8-inch by 8-inch brass bell was removed from a playground at Masone Beach on Waterford Road in Island Park. The incident happened between 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, cops said.

The playground where the memorial bell stood was just dedicated last week in memory of 26 children, teachers, and other personnel tragically killed in Newtown last year. The bell is inscribed with the number 26 and the saying, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings."
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the theft to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.
