Cuomo: 300 Miles of Road Repairs Planned for LI

Three hundred miles of Long Island's most winter-battered roads will be repaired this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last Friday. 

After a harsh winter, state and federal officials are committing $100 million to an overhaul of Long Island's roads.

The resurfacing projects will include removal of top layers of pavement from all lanes, repairs of base concrete and asphalt, improvement of drainage systems, and installation of new pavement, depending on the location, officials said. Traffic signal detectors and markings will be added to the finished product.

Officials will be alerting drivers, local municipalities, and emergency personnel to any planned construction, most of which is planned for overnight and off peak hours.

Long Island politicians from both sides of the aisle are praising the project and what it will do for constituents.

“Each year, travel in Nassau County and on Long Island becomes more difficult," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola. "After an especially harsh winter, our roads are in desperate need of repair. This funding will provide thousands of Long Islanders safe, reliable transportation routes and will help to improve our transportation infrastructure.”

"No matter where you travel, vehicles are forced to dodge cavernous potholes," said State Sen. Carl Marcellino, R-Syosset. "Tires, shocks and alignments have been laid to rest from Glen Cove to Montauk. These funds will jump start the process of repairing these torn up roads and help make them safe and drivable for all who use them every day.”

The New York State Department of Transportation identified some of the worst stretches of roads on Long Island for the project. Here are the areas targeted for the project: 

• Long Island Expressway (LIE/I-495) eastbound and westbound mainline between exits 37 and 46 in the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, Nassau County;
• Northern State Parkway (NSP) between the Wantagh State Parkway (WSP) and the LIE, in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County;
• Meadowbrook State Parkway (MSP) between Glenn Curtis Boulevard and the NSP in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County;
• NY Route 24/Hempstead Turnpike between the MSP and NY Route 110 in the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay, Nassau and Suffolk counties;
• NY Route 25A between the Nassau/Suffolk border and Bread and Cheese Hollow Road in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County;
• NY Route 24/Flanders Road between County Roads 104/63 and Bellows Pond Road in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County;
• NY Route 25A between NY Route 111 and Edgewood Avenue in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County;
• NY Route 25 between Kings Park Road and NY Route 111 in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County;
• Simeon Woods Road between the LIE and Kings Highway in the Town of Smithtown, Suffolk County;
• NY Route 25/Jericho Turnpike between NY Routes 106/107 and Robbins Lane, Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County;
• NY Route 25/Jericho Turnpike between Brush Hollow Road and Jericho Quadrangle East in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County;
• NY Route 878/Nassau Expressway between Burnside Avenue and Rockaway Turnpike in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County;
