Fran Adelson Stepping Down as Council President

City announces rotating council officers.

Fran Adelson on Thursday will announce that she is essentially stepping down as president of the Long Beach City Council, as new presidents will be appointed periodically, according to an announcement posted on the city’s website Monday.

Under the title “Rotating City Council Officers,” the announcement reads: “In the interest of openness and transparency, the City Council will be periodically appointing a new president. Fran Adelson, having just completed her first six months in office as Council President, will be turning over the title to Len Torres. Scott J. Mandel will be stepping in as Vice President. These changes will occur at Thursday night’s meeting.”

The city has not yet posted the meeting's agenda on its website, but a printed copy of the agenda indicates that Adelson will announce that she is stepping down from her position and a new president and vice president will be elected, according to a city source. The council's meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of each month, but this week's meeting was reschedule due to the Independence Day holiday falling on Wednesday.
