Long Beach Grandmother: TSA 'Strip-Searched' Me

85-year-old woman threatens to sue after she said agency took her clothes off in a private room.

Lenore Zimmerman, an 85-year-old, walker-using Long Beach resident, claims the Transportation Security Administration strip-searched her in a private room at John F. Kennedy International Airport after she refused a body scan Tuesday, the Daily News reports.

The 110-pound grandmother, who was on her way to Fort Lauderdale from the the JetBlue terminal, feared the scanner might interfere with her defibrillator, and now she is threatening to sue the agency after two agents took her clothes off and she injured her leg in the process, according to the Huffington Post.

My mother in law has a defibrillator, and they just pat her down lightly. This is done very professionally by a female officer. My experience at the airport, both for myself and my mother in law is that if you are cooperative and polite, the same courtesy will be afforded to you. No doubt some officers are over-zealous, but cooperation and a thank you go a long way.

Why is the government even involved in airport security? It should be up to the airlines who have a stake in the outcome. They might not have treated a paying customer with the same indifference.

The government should control and oversee airport security, even if they use subcontractors. Leaving it to the airlines will result corners being cut to reduce expenditures. I do think that retired police and ex-military personnel should comprise the majority of screeners.Who would be better doing this at JFK then retired NYPD?

Why is the gov't involved in airport security? Huh, are you really asking that question? Can you say 9/11?

She should have told them about the defibulator. This is the world we live in today. We want our rights, we want freedom, and we want protection from terrorists, so something has to give.

Mrs. Zimmerman should definitely sue. Some of the people of the TSA are idiots. They probably need directions to get home. A high-profile lawsuit just might let the TSA know that some intelligence is needed when performing their job. An 85 year old women with a walker poses a threat? C'mon.............................
mildred petrassi December 04, 2011 at 08:52 PM
I couldn't agree more with Matt. These TSA workers are idiots; uneducated; and are all on a power trip. They know they can prevent you from boarding your flight, etc., etc. They lack the insight to know who could be a threat. While I think it would be doubtful that an 85 year old woman is a threat; we are not in a third world country; and we should not be treated as such. To further strip search an 85 year old woman is an outrage at best; and she should sue their wings off. We are all well aware of 9/ll and that will never be forgotten; but a bit of common sense would go a long way. I'm sure this passenger explained her situation; but you need to speak and understand English before making a fool out of a senior citizen.

If this doesn't illustrate the perversity and sheer stupidity of our country's current suicidal immersion in political correctness I don't know what will. I can only hope something akin to common sense will return to Foggy Bottom come next November. (I think it is called profiling.)

Do you have your brown shirt on, Barry Gold? Can you spell "pogrom?" What does one's Jewishness have to do with her legal claim? In your self-hating world, Barry Gold, do you believe that Jews still have due procress of law?
Barry Gold December 05, 2011 at 07:28 AM
tired of people sueing for everything. A lawsuit proves nothing except how greedy and intolerant people are of a select few knuckleheads. Why must every small injustice turn into a million dollar charade is more like it. Suck it up!!!
Longbeacher December 05, 2011 at 01:25 PM
Just for the record, there are camaras all over ,lets wait and se if this really happened before we all jump on the airlines,
Candygram for Mongo December 05, 2011 at 06:40 PM
TSA screeners need to protect us from potential threats. In this case, the person clearly matched a profile. Of Pain in the Ass elderly lady.

To answer your question, airlines do not want to be directly involved with security because it would be an added cost that would be reflected in ticket prices. The flying public is price sensitive. If taxes pay for national airport security, it will not show up in the base fare of a ticket, although a user fee will show up as a small passenger facility charge.

Long Beach (LGB) is the absolute worst T.S.A. employees of any airport I've encountered in the country. They are a rude and bullyish. Every one of them should be fired. I refuse to fly through Long Beach anymore because of a similar instance I had with T.S.A. there. I also will NOT fly on Jet Blue, because they provided me with incorrect information which resulted in my incident with T.S.A. and a missed flight. Good for this woman for suing! SICK AND TIRED OF THE T.S.A. TREATING THE FLYING PUBLIC LIKE DIRT! WE PAY THEIR SALARIES, SHOW US THE RESPECT WE DESERVE!
Joe Toven April 05, 2012 at 05:39 AM
The moment we sacrifice our rights we loose them. Nothing has to "give."
Joe Toven April 05, 2012 at 05:40 AM
Couldn't agree more. T.S.A. = higher the ignorant, rude and incompetent. The Long Beach staff is particularly horrendous. I won't fly through that airport anymore because of it.
Joe Toven April 05, 2012 at 05:43 AM
I don't know what a rude T.S.A. employee has to do with "political correctness." But I do know the entire agency was put in place under George W. Bush. The "heightened" security, which is a waste of tax dollars, was a Republican plan justified through fear tactics. Let us all pray Obama wins re-election to prevent more right wing attacks on this country.
Joe Toven April 05, 2012 at 05:44 AM
Thrilled this brace woman is standing up to these uneducated goons and suing. SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT!!!! You don't like it Barry, GET OUT OF THE COUNTRY!
Joe Toven April 05, 2012 at 05:45 AM
Oh "YouAgain" You are so witty! Let's see what you would do if you were harassed by the Long Beach T.S.A.. I'd rather sit next to this brave elderly woman than you any day.
