NICE Bus Schedule to Change April 8
On Sunday at midnight, the Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) will begin operating on a new schedule. All 48 routes will continue to operate, though customers are urged to refer to new timetables for any changes to their buses. Fares remain at $2.25. There will be no changes to Able-Ride service.
The 48-route system is being redesigned with a combination of new express service on routes with the greatest demand, restored service, reduced service on some underutilized lines and adjustments to schedule frequency.
According to Michael Setzer, Vice President of Veolia, among the reasons for the service redesign is the requirement that NICE establish a balanced budget annually by April 1.
"These changes will close a $7.3 million operating shortfall for 2012, which remains even after additional subsidies, efficiency and productivity savings and slightly improved fare box revenue," Setzer said.

New printed schedules will be on NICE buses and at major terminals early the week of April 1 -- they are marked "Effective April 8, 2012" at the top of the front page.

Nassau Ranked Sixth Most Healthiest County in New York
Nassau County was ranked sixth among all 62 counties in New York on the 2012 County Health Rankings list released Tuesday. Suffolk County was ranked 15th.
Published online at www.countyhealthrankings.org by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the rankings assess the overall health of nearly every county in all 50 states, using a standard way to measure how healthy people are and how long they live.
The rankings consider factors that affect people's health within four categories: health behavior, social and economic factors, clinical care and physical environment. This year's rankings include several new measures, such as how many fast food restaurants are in a county and levels of physical inactivity among residents.
Nassau, Winthrop-University Hospital Announce 'Welcome Back Warriors' Job Fair
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano was joined Monday by John Collins, Winthrop-University Hospital CEO, Chuck Cutolo, General Counsel for Governmental Relations for Nassau Community College and U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Jeff Matassa to announce the 2012 "Welcome Back Warriors" All-Veterans Jobs and Support Services Fair which will be held on Tuesday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Nassau Community College at the physical education complex.
Dozens of companies will be there with job opportunities, along with experts who will help to improve job-hunting skills, the G.I. Bill and other services for returning veterans.
