Officials Call for Town Clerk's Resignation After Arrest

Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla is facing criminal misconduct charges.

Supervisor Kate Murray and other Hempstead Town officials are calling for the resignation of Town Clerk Mark Bonilla after his arrest Friday.

According to Newsday, the Republican town clerk "attempted to obtain intimate photos of a female subordinate who had filed a claim of sexual harassment against him."

The complaint, filed by Det. Investigator William Walsh, says that on Aug. 19 Bonilla tried to force one of his employees, Alex Desidoro, to supply him with compromising photos of a female employee who had filed the sexual harassment claim against Bonilla.

According to a release, the town attorney’s office investigated complaints against the clerk and contacted the Nassau District Attorney’s Office with information in this matter. Subsequently, detectives from the district attorney’s office arrested the clerk and charged him with three misdemeanors.

“I am personally offended and disgusted by the alleged conduct of the Town Clerk," Supervisor Murray said in a statement issued by the town. "Public officials must hold themselves above reproach, and the credible allegations that have come to my attention have undermined my trust and confidence in him. As a result, I am calling upon the Town Clerk to immediately resign.”

Bonilla, 50, is charged with official misconduct, second-degree attempted coercion and petty larceny. The charges are all misdemeanors.

Bonilla resides in Bellmore and was last elected to his post in 2011. The the first Hispanic to be elected to a townwide position in the Town of Hempstead, Bonilla has been in office since 2003.

Information for Bonilla's attorney was not immediately available.

In fact, his accusers should be charged with speech and thought crimes against this Hispanic target. Don't they know all evidence and witness accounts against Hispanic males are corrupt and biased.
Nelson Ruiz September 22, 2012 at 02:32 pm
"Bonilla tried to force one of his employees, Alex Desidoro, to supply him with compromising photos of a female employee who had filed the sexual harassment claim against Bonilla."
So, do "compromising" pictures already exist that are the centerpiece of this very suspect case? if so, does Mr. Desiderio have them and where did he get pics of his co-worker? Mr. Bonilla had previously been targeted via a paper thin sexual harassment charge and now appears to the target of an additional smear. I would like to see a full investigation of the ENTIRE situation including the relationship of Mr. Desiderio to the supposed victim. Lets give justice a chance. This sounds like another racially motivated lynch mob
Patcher September 22, 2012 at 02:34 pm
If the only defense you can offer is his hispanic name, then you my friend are the racist.
Nelson Ruiz September 22, 2012 at 02:43 pm
Patcher:
Lets face it. You live in a racially segregated area and the only person of hispanic origin you may have contact with is your cleaning lady. You post online from the shadows yet you almost certainly would not utter a peep concerning your virulent bigotry in public. You are here this morning leading the lynch mob for Mr.Bonnilla solely because he has an Hispanic surname. I am uncertain about the facts concerning this case but from the brief description above , it stinks to high heaven. Knuckle dragging racists such as yourself may post from your all white enclaves but do not expect others to stand by and stand mute as cretins such as yourself attempt to railroad someone without a fair hearing of ALL of the facts. Mr. Bonilla is a AMERICAN and has God given rights which clearly annoys you.
Patcher September 22, 2012 at 02:46 pm
If you, Ruiz, wish to base this man's defense entirely on his race, you can do that. Since hispanics commit crime at roughly three times the rate of Whites (FBI, 2010) then your man has three times the chance of being guilty and should receive three times the suspicion of a White man.
Are you sure you want to base your argument of his innocence solely on his race?
Nelson Ruiz September 22, 2012 at 02:57 pm
In America, a person is innocent until proven guilty, except if he is black or Hispanic, for people like you.
Fair minded people that read these posts need to ask more questions about the facts of this case. Who are the players? What political motivations may they have? What type of relationships exist among the players? These are questions fair minded people ask so, they are not directed at you, Mr. "Patcher". This is 2012 and thankfully YOU are the oddity now not the great majority of decent folks that may smell a rat concerning this case. I do not expect to change your opinion of blacks or Hispanics or Jews. You are what you are. A hick and a hillbilly stuck in a time that has passed. Post all the Anti-Jew, Anti-Black and Anti-Hispanic nonsense that the patch will allow. The more you post the clearer it becomes concerning what may really be the issue in this case.
Joe September 22, 2012 at 03:21 pm
If the DA's office manufactured evidence to arrest and charge the suspect, then he has serious recourse against them. He's not an average citizen, he's a public official, and I'm sure he knows what to do if the charges were trumped up. As to making this a racial issue - there is nothing to indicate that it is. Hispanics are just like everyone else, which means that some of them are jerks who don't know how to act in an office. Whether or not Mr. Bonilla is such a person will be decided at trial.
28 September 22, 2012 at 03:34 pm
Mr. Ruiz - your misguided sense of hispanic entitlement is appalling and impedes progress and assimilation. Equality cannot be realized with such ignorant philosophy.
I imagine you are not privy to all the facts - so if you are indeed a "fair minded" person - wait for the facts to be revealed, get that big hispanic chip off you shoulder and refrain from throwing around the "bigot" label which is so frequently used by guilty people with no substance to their opinions.

While i hold most politicians in low regard. He should not be made to re sign. He is innocent until proven guilty. What if he re signed and later had his charges dropped or was found not guilty ? Anyone want to look for another job in this obama economy ?
Just telling it like it is, my cleaning lady is latina.
Frank McQuade September 22, 2012 at 04:42 pm
I am a friend of Mark Bonilla and always admired his work. If he is guilty, then he should resign for his actions. If he is not guilty, then he should not resign. The investigation should be conducted quickly so that the Town of Hempstead Clerk's oiffice can proceed with its important work. I am very sorry and disappointed at this news.
28 September 22, 2012 at 05:34 pm
While I have no opinion on Mr. Bonilla's character as I do not know him personally, I absolutely agree with you Mr. McQuade.
If he is innocent then he should definitely remain at his job but if he is guilty he should definitely resign and save the taxpayers time and money as well preserve the dignity of his office.
J Rod September 22, 2012 at 05:46 pm
I know nothing of this individual or of the case against him. If the allegations are true, then he deserves what's coming. My question is: what purpose was served by the article mentioning that he is Hispanic? There was no mention of the ethnicity of Michael Fagen when his allegations of misconduct, and calls for his resignation, were covered in this journal. One may conjecture, but I submit that it certainly led the readers to draw an association between an ethnicity and the allegations.
joanne September 22, 2012 at 07:15 pm
@ JRod, EXACTLY! never knew a criminal act was more devious due to anyone's ethnic background.
Any person who sexually harasses another is scum in my book, regardless of race, sex or ethnic background.

A person is innocent until proven guilty, except, of course if you label him a "racist". Anyone who prosecutes a Hispanic is a racist, right? Anyone who investigates or arrests a Hispanic is racist.
Look at the name calling you are doing there Ruiz. Look in the mirror. You are either obsessed with race, hate all except Hispanics or are simply a very intellectuality dull person.

Gary September 23, 2012 at 04:15 am
If you must know the truth, I actually had to contact Mr. Bonilla a few years ago regarding something between a neighbor and I in another area in TOH.
From the tone of his letter to me... I did not trust him at all in the matter... so this does not surprise me.
Gary September 23, 2012 at 04:18 am
You definitely have sensitivity issues.
Every time a Jew is arrested for something... do you see Jews ranting about bias? No... they are embarrassed. Same with Italians, blacks, etc...
Mickey Howell September 23, 2012 at 04:31 am
Studies have shown the 95% of the people that send letters to town officials concerning their neighbors are rats.
Maybe that is why the very competent Mr. Bonilla treated you in that fashion.

Mrs. Sumersille, can you be so kind as to indicate to me, please, in what way I violated terms of use? The only word that could have been construed as offensive was pervert and as I recalled my comment was not insulting. Again, please, provide and explanation, or is this China?
Earthling September 23, 2012 at 01:34 pm
I wanted and I did comment on this touchy subject, but it was placed in pending approval status (which happens to me often) I believe I have always express my comments clearly and always careful of being respectful with the language I use. Granted Im using a pen name, but on this forums you must use precaution, just as the editors are doing by censuring stuff, by placing it in the pending approval status. Well, I don't approve Bonilla's behavior and of those who are desperately trying to cover it up by claiming is an attack on latinos/hispanos/brown/mestizos. He is a white latino, the first to serve in that capacity and he blew it, just like the other white latino, Dave Mejias.
south shore gal September 23, 2012 at 02:20 pm
Race should not be an issue here. The issue is whether or not he is guilty of sexual harrassment and abusing the power of his position. I do not know Mr. Bonilla, so I cannot comment on his integrity or the verity of the charges against him. If he is guilty, he should resign. If he is not guilty, he should not resign.
JP Ashcroft September 23, 2012 at 06:40 pm
Shut it down Matt. Only disconnected people post here. None of it is nice and it's not warranted either.

To the Regional Director, Mrs. Sumersille:
First, my pen name is EA"R'THLING, you omitted the "r". I suppose you are not familiar with the word or what it means. Your title is Regional Editor, and as such you should begin by editing your personal post, the one describing your accomplishments. Second, you still have not responded to my request on how I violated the terms of usage. Thank you in advance. EARTHLING.

As to coverage and prosecution, what is the difference between Vito Lopez and Mark Bonilla besides the (D) or (R) after their names?
MikeC. September 28, 2012 at 11:04 am
Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape fiasco, and the Hofstra allegations of a few years ago should make everyone take pause. Don't let the unproven allegations of a possibly disgruntled group of subordinates with an axe to grind derail a career. Prove him guilty in court before you run for your pitchforks and torches.
