Story and Photos by Rosemary Leonetti/Syntax

These 185 commemorative flags will fly to recognize veterans and those who are currently serving in the military. The flags will be on display through Dec. 6 to serve as a symbol of perseverance and bravery of those who sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms, the school district said.

In years past, the flags were displayed in front of the district administration building on Lido Boulevard, which has been closed due to damages caused by Hurricane Sandy. This year, seventh-graders reached out to construct Fields of Honor in front of all the schools in the district. For a $30 donation, area residents were invited to sponsor anyone they wanted to honor with one or more of these keepsake flags. Proceeds will benefit veterans and active military families through scholarships and camp stipends.
