LBHS Classroom Destined for National Star-Studded Show

Story by Rosemary Leonetti.

REALChange Productions, in partnership with the Adopt-A-Classroom program, will film next week at Long Beach High School for a star-studded nationally televised program.

Follow Long Beach Patch on Facebook.

A film crew will visit the classroom of social studies teacher Dr. Andy Smith as part of the Real Change Project starting at 11 a.m. Feb. 25. The filming will involve Smith, LBHS students and Real Change founder and CEO Liam Murphy, a graduate of LBHS’s Class of 1996.

Murphy has worked on this project for six years, connecting superstar celebrities including Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Pitbull, Lady Antebellum, LMFAO and Jason Mraz, with their hometown schools in an effort to give back to those who helped them get their successful start, according to the Long Beach School District.

Murphy family are Long Beach natives who have deep ties within the community. His father, Jack, taught at Long Beach High School for 30 years, his grandmother was a lunch room monitor, and Liam is passionate in supporting his district as well as schools in need throughout the country.

Long Beach teachers and students will be presented with donated supplies, including an assortment of technology products and Samsung tablets, to help rebuild and replenish supplies following the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

This prime-time, nationally televised compilation show will air April 23 at 7 p.m. on CBS. Starting March 1 and running through May 31, people can visit www.officedepot.com/realchange to make a donation to these schools and Office Depot will match the donations made.

Superstars???? Wow todays youth is brainwashed everyday!
lori February 23, 2013 at 10:55 am
Why is there so much negativity when organizations or individuals do anything positive to give back to the community? Todays youth are not brainwashed, they are talented and tech savvy.
chimienti27 February 23, 2013 at 12:55 pm
Thanks to Live Real Change and Adopt A Classroom, mine and my wife's schools are receiving funding in excess of $15,000. They've adopted 2 schools that were hit hard by Sandy, one in Far Rockaway and one here in our hometown of Long Beach. They're sponsoring approximately 150 teachers and staff members. So appreciative...keep looking out!!!
Good Girl February 24, 2013 at 08:00 am
My comment was aimed at he use of "Superstars" actually. This list provided in no way shape or form constitutes that title. As far as the organization and the work it does is it is wonderful. And no matter how tech savvy and smart a person may be, the media without question has BRAINWASHED todays society into thinking the importance and greatness of money hungry, sub par talented individuals.
lori February 24, 2013 at 09:22 am
Yes goodgirl i will agree with that , i would not spend one cent one some of the so called"talent". However the adopt a classroom program is outstanding, as is adopt a highway.

I dont agree with all or even most of Harveys politics but there is NO doubt that he is one theRead More greatest benefactors to Long Beach in its history.......maybe THE greatest. Who let these people run the shelter. They looked like con artists right from the start.
andy napolitano June 13, 2013 at 01:16 pm
@BSM if you read the post you would see it tells you to go to a Facebook site called Rescue Ink =Read More The Facts. On this site there is a copy of Rescue Inks's 2011 tax form which is public information. It shows right on that tax form how they only paid 6% of their income for the animals. Also it is in the contract (also public information) with the City Of Long Beach, that Rescue Ink is just "running" the shelter. The building is owned & maintained by the City which also pays all utilities & vet bills. You should do a little research yourself before you question us. We could never put up these "facts" unless they were true.
