Pee Wee, Junior Basketball Champions Crowned

Long Beach Recreation Department wraps up its hoops season.


The Long Beach Recreation basketball season wrapped up recently and both boys and girls teams can claim the title of champions.

In the Pee Wee Girls division, the Sea Wolves, coached by Beth Mercante, faced the Scarlet Knights, coached by Eamon Mchale and Ed Imberman. At the end of the third quarter the Scarlet Knights held a 13 to 11 advantage, but in the fourth quarter the Sea Wolves poured it on with eight points to win the game 19 to 15.  

In the Pee Wee Boys division, the Terrapins, coached by Paige Bettineschi, battled it out with the Friars coached by Ashley Passaro and Mallory Notholt. The Friars played outstanding throughout the game but just fell short in the end against the undefeated Terrapins. The Final score was 26 to 21 in a very well played game.

In the Junior Girls division, the Mercury, coached by Rich Haines and Kevin Mannle, played against The Mystics, coached by Tommy Moriarty and Mike McDonagh, in an epic battle. The game featured many lead changes throughout, but in the end the Mystics pulled through with a 22 to19 victory.  

In the Junior Boys division, the Knicks coached by Liz Moriarty and Jesse Gittler ran up against a very tough Celtics team coached by Steven Lampa. The Celtics held the lead at half time 19 – 11. The Knicks dished and swished their way to 16 points in the second half, but just fell short in the end losing 28 to 27.
