Jellyfish sightings in Long Beach forced city officials to close beaches to swimmers on Sunday, but the were reopened Monday.

Several red jellyfish were spotted in the ocean along Edwards and Riverside boulevards, two adjacent beaches at the center of the city, after swimmers evacuated the ocean on seeing a reddish tint in the water, according to Newsday.

The beaches were closed at about 3 p.m. Sunday and remained closed as long as the jellyfish were visible. On Monday, the City of Long Beach announced that the beaches were reopened, stating that “the water is clear of jellyfish.”
