City Closes Beaches To Swimmers

Strong surf forces city lifeguards to not allow swimming Saturday.

Residents may have found the waters off Long Beach sparse of swimmers one day after Tropical Storm Andrea blew through the barrier island.

That's because Long Beach Lifeguard Chief Paul Gillespie made a determination that due to heavy surf, the ocean would be closed to swimmers Saturday.

The beaches were open, but only surfing was permitted; no swimming.
