Long Beach became a city in 1922, 10 years after it was established as an incorporated village. Today, it is one of only two cities in Nassau County (the other is Glen Cove) and has several departments, including police, fire, sanitation, water/sewer, lifeguards, zoning, parks and recreation and more. The city operates with a five-member council that appoints a city manager who oversees the daily operations of the departments. The city council meets at City Hall, located at 1 W. Chester St., the first and third Tuesday of each month.
