The City can't co ordinate the buses with the LIRR for much of the day. This is symptomatic of theRead More way things are run here. And unless this place offers really amazing attractions why would anyone drive to the bayside of town to park, then wait for a bus , then take a 10-15 minute ride a bar? Unless they are giving away free hamburgers.

Trying to Make Sense May 3, 2013 at 09:33 am
You Know Brendan, I do love your take on this. Just do notice that the burger joints you referenceRead More don't talk down to people any more than you do(consistently) and that while you mock these "foodies" you are behaving like one on the meta level... you are so beyond them, you source your backyard burger beef(C-Town?). I kind of like the burger at John Henry's, never ate at Shake Shack which was slammed in a NY Post review yesterday while this Fi place was given some props.

BSM - please define "a major portion of the population". Population 33,312 (City DataRead More 2011). "Roughly 250 residents and business owners participated in the focus group meetings and more than 2,350 people completed an online survey..." (longbeachlistens). So less than 1% participated in the groups while 7% took some ridiculous online survey. Hmmm? 1%ers calling the shots for 99%ers.

Where am I 6 m after Sandy? In LIMBO! The condo I lived at priced us out as far as returning. LivedRead More w/ my mom & she sold the condo at a huge loss. We are in an apartment that is smaller than my bedroom in the condo. Supposed to move by 5/31 but having difficulty getting 2 bed 2 bath that is affordable. Got screwed by Project Hope (no Hope) TWICE & not getting the assistance I need to replace wheelchair & things for the business I am starting. I not only lost ALL of my material possessions in the storm I lost much of my faith in people. I can count on less than 1 hand those that came through for me mostly I just get false promises & the run around. I know that life will never be the same. Wherever the funds from the fundraisers & donations are going I haven't a clue but I have concluded any additional help I get (I got a little help from FEMA) will be of my own doing. There is a LACK OF FUNDS, LACK OF SUPPORT GROUPS, LACK OF CARING - need I go on? My life has been forever changed by Sandy & I will never see life or people the same way again. I will somehow get my busines off the ground because I am determined to succeed and show all those who have tried to drag me down these past 6 months that I could do it despite them. I won't ask for help again from places like the SBA, Project No Hope & the like they have kicked me down as far as I can go. I have perservered for the last 51 largely through my own efforts & will continue to do the same. From what I have seen the little guy simply get lost in the shuffle when it comes to Sandy aid.

Oh and just to make the city's plan even more helpful to local merchants, the food trucks will beRead More out side city hall in the plaza on Monday's. Andrew- my heart just went out to you and the other legitimate businesses in town. the concernsRead More that you raised are the accurate ones. the entire model for the town is the boardwalk attracting people and then they are enticed to walk up to Park Ave and to support the businesses up there. the old saying location, location, location was how the model worked. I wonder how the former council president would feel if a real estate truck from Oceanside came down to the beach? or would the buffoon that is the current council pres, be happy if a legal services truck shows up next? or Happy Torres if a grant truck shows up (sorry, he would be glad since he doesn't write any). at the heart of the matter is simply the question: where is the business district now? and why should businesses pay rent when they don't have to? this is the amateur hour at it's worst. i'm sorry Andrew

Eileen M. Tsiapanos April 27, 2013 at 12:52 pm
I'm not sure I understand why it wud take $44MILLION dollars to build a new boardwalk. Barry GreeneRead More is absolutely right, too. Why rip up the parts that WERE NOT damaged? More likely than not, because the one they will build will be somehow different than what was there and the new wouldn't match the already existing. Besides, more $$ to rip up more boards and put in more. This way they think $44 MILLION dollars looks better spent, as if we're all morons.

This is a spectacular idea, I can see many other businesses following suit. How does this exactlyRead More work? Does he just open up a business on taxpayer property and collect fees? Do the taxpayers get a percentage? What happens if a person gets hurt, do the attorneys file a suit against the company or the city? Does his company have any liability insurance? Does the city need to be named on the policy as an additional insured? Can taxpayers just show up, stand real close to this group and participate without sending in the fee?

Barry, Do not worry about the surfers. Surfers a resilient bunch and they will decide which beachesRead More should be reserved for them and the schools. The city should accommodate them by being less stringent on the locations of the schools and surfing beaches this year. Perhaps move the schools to the completed sections of the boardwalk as soon as possible. And remember people should be glad to have these surfers in town if for no other reason than the economic impact they have on this town and its' businesses.
barry greene April 11, 2013 at 09:40 am
might be right. people have missed an important point as well. when the "construction"Read More finally starts, won't there be a lot of heavy equipment on those beaches? in the street? won't those beaches be closed? so we can expect the busiest beaches in town to be closed this summer? based on what our "almost famous" city manager is claiming, looks like national to laurelton will be closed this summer. have fun parking. oh yes, and the surfers. where will they get pushed off?

NYSC has little or no customer service. Bad enough that when you walk in a gym that you have beenRead More going to for years, everyone ignores you and continues with their personal conversations. Why hasn't there been a notification of what is going on with the reopeninbg of the gym??? There has never been an update. I walked into Synergy and everyone was welcoming and friendly. This is certainly not what you find in LB NYSC. I just called them a few weeks ago and told them to stop charging me $15/month and refund me the money they had been charging me all along. I don't think I will be going back there.
Mahsa Moshtaghi April 10, 2013 at 02:22 am
This whole "Sandy" experience has made me so humble and appreciate the things in life IRead More didn't before. It frustrates me to hear people talk bad about NYSC in Long Beach, because I really miss it. I was never a fan of Synergy and loved the old Hollywood Gym. Instead of playing the blame game on NYSC, does anyone consider the idea that maybe it is the Landloard's fault. Either way, I just want my old gym back. Hopefully sooner than later!

Bee, Have you any idea how much business the surf schools (and their students) bring to this city.Read More Not only do they employ many employees directly by the schools, their customers buy beach passes and spend money in our town. They also help support 4 surf shop businesses, and their employees. Not to mention their philanthropic endeavors along with the beach fees and permit fees they are an asset to this city. Add this to the effort they are exerting to get the sorely needed amenities at the beach. Think about the serenity you will enjoy at the beach while enjoying one of the fine delicacies our food trucks will be providing you as you relax on the shore. And remember if not for the forward thinking of the surfing groups in advocating for these food trucks what you would need to do to get a bite to eat.
Bee HappyLB April 4, 2013 at 01:02 pm
Better yet, close your business in town immediately and get a truck. I'm sure the City will beRead More charging the trucks next to nothing to park there. Who cares that LB loses what little taxes we do get from store owners. Our beachfront is almost free stomping ground for businesses... Just look at how much money (or more correctly.. how little) the surf schools and the allegria actually give the town while taking over 2 beaches. I wish the serenity of the beach enjoyed by residents would count for something considering we pay the lionshare of the taxes in town.
