Best thing LB School District ever did was hiring Dr. Passi. Anyone with inside knowledge of theRead More school district knows how political the environment is (just attend a Board meeting) and how the union leadership tries to exercise vice grip control on the Board. We will miss you Dr. Passi. BBP is lucky to have you.

What a great show! Both of my daughters were in it and I have never seen a more talented cast. TheRead More cast put their heart and soul into his show and you could just feel the energy. I facebooked the show and several families took their kids to see it and they all loved it.
paul.d.spellman April 26, 2013 at 06:38 am
I have said before with such a low turnout and a high percentage of district workers residing in theRead More district, whatever candidates the employees of the district want elected will be those chosen. Eddie, Have you seen this program and I wonder if LB has been using it http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/vet_out_the_vote_g4O9ka3AT5o4gJ2hPdnvTK

"actions are learned and passed on, from family" could not agree more with that, whatRead More does this following article tell us? Perhaps "Do as I bang on my keyboard and not as I failed to do"? http://tinyurl.com/cjh5ro7
Brendan April 26, 2013 at 11:24 am
Lucy, for once, I agree with (mostly) everything you just said. No one should be destroying,Read More defacing or disfiguring property that doesn't belong to them and if someone is found doing that, they should make restitution and be punished to whatever extent the rules allow for the offense. My point is that school discipline is a non-newsworthy subject matter and should simply be handled without this ridiculous and absurd fanfare.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Long Beach School District, nominations of historical figures who have influenced education will be accepted for the 2013 Long Beach High School Wall of Fame.
Leonard Bauman April 24, 2013 at 10:47 am
I nominate my son's teacher Carole Gordon (circa 1973-1976), a 5th, 6th grade teacher working atRead More Lindell School. She moved to Rockville Centre in 1976 and left Long Beach School System sometime in the 70s or 80s. Carole Gordon was a great teacher and had a great influence on my son's future and successful career. Another great Long Beach school person, was Ms. Fleishman, the former Librarian at Lindell School circa 1973-1976.

We have really lost something as a society if angry teenagers who hate theirRead More teachers/principals/parents and say stupid things as a result of their hormones raging out of control are major news stories.
A combined chorus of the Great Neck North High School Jazz Choir, the Long Beach High School Select Choir and Great Neck North High alumni performed songs from “Les Misérables” in a benefit concert for the Long Beach School District music department.
Eddie April 23, 2013 at 08:20 am
A fine event. Interesting to see such great talent from Long Beach and Great Neck get together.Read More With only a few hours of rehearsal, the results were professional. Lots of talent in these kids -- a resource no storm can diminish.

Thank you for recognizing our hard working children. My daughter is in this production. All theRead More kids, pit orchestra, stage and lighting staff, have been rehearsing daily, missing classes, staying up late making up the work they are missing and showcasing an amazing performance. I trust those who bash the arts on this site are staying home with their lonely selves. I hope you enjoyed their production. Thank you

The College Whisperer™ April 19, 2013 at 10:52 am
In short, being a "good student" these days is simply not enough to get you into theRead More college you may want to attend.
The College Whisperer™ April 19, 2013 at 10:32 am
Paying for college is, indeed, a critical issue. But getting in, particularly when demographicsRead More works against you (colleges can't take every student from LI, which students generally apply to the very same schools), compounded by an environment that, by reason of sheer numbers, has become increasingly selective.
Cosmo April 19, 2013 at 08:46 am
If you are a good student getting into a good college won't be the problem, affording it will.

just as there are some lots being subdivided, there is at least one case of two lots being combinedRead More to create a monster house in the WE. And regarding 30 foot tall houses... we have to get used to it because with the new FEMA guidelines, that's what many people will be doing in order to have both a tall foundation AND the room they want... otherwise the flood insurance will be astronomical. And if you have a mortgage, you are forced to have flood insurance in most cases.
Me April 17, 2013 at 09:57 am
@Barrry, there isn't anything being scooped up for 70-80 grand in the WE. Take a look at soldRead More properties on MLS and you will see that gutted. "as is" WE homes are selling for around $200K. There may have been some desperate people who unloaded homes quickly after the storm but that isn't the case anymore. The WE will soon also take on a whole new charector as all these new houses are getting built and I am sure the usual suspects will be involved especialy when it comes to sub-dividing any double lots and granting variances.

Probably yes, depending on your personal situation, because this time the bad guys have all theRead More bullets. In today's world that would be money, influence and the ability to bend the city leaders to it's liking. It's disgusting but very real. And it is not only here unfortunately, it's everywhere, so know where you're running to if that is your choice. I admire your spirit Ms. Wright and wish you Good Luck ...

Me April 11, 2013 at 01:02 pm
@MikeC: Nobody in New Orleans itself were required to raise their homes as they are protectedRead More (sometimes) by the levee system. The state can use the HMGP money as part of an overall flood protection program instead of giving to the individual homeowners. Which is what they did and poured money into the levee system. In the outlying areas that are not protected by Levees they did give money to people to raise their homes. I can’t say it was mandated I think the mandated requirements came post Katrina and were really given teeth with the 2012 changes to law that eliminated any grandfathered/subsidized rates for houses that were not raised after being found substantially damaged.

Warren Vogel April 9, 2013 at 08:14 am
The dirty little secret is this. Most of the students come from Hempstead and Far Rockaway onRead More these buses. The truth is most are NOT displaced but were residents there BEFORE the storm. Now they are getting free rides to school instead of being dropped off by the caravan of cars that stop in front of the schools with Queens and Hemstead stickers on them. Like the true leeches they are, they saw right away that they could get on these buses for free rides. I hope the police take note that these people are stealing MILLIONS is education dollars from us.
Eddie April 9, 2013 at 08:05 am
The School Board should have applied for a FEMA grant to be reimbursed for this money. Just as theRead More City should have applied to FEMA to reimburse the City taxpayers for the lost tax revenues that will be caused by the storm. Let me guess -- the School Board hasn't done that either?
All's Fair In Love... And College Admissions

Do what my idiot cousin Joe did. He is one of the dumbest people on the planet yet he had theRead More college admissions process down cold. He changed his name to Malik Shabazz had his mail sent to 1455 Martin Luther King Blvd. He was admitted to Harvard. When he showed up not one of the gold plated phonies that run the school had the nerve ask any questions. He slept through the 4 years and got straight 4.00 index. Try it. It may work twice.

If his one big cost saving idea is to "digitize" report cards, we are in for some seriousRead More issues. I would have been more impressed if he had some real ideas, like closing atleast 1 school in the district, scrapping the $15,000,000 stadium that could not be afforded before the storm, let alone after the storm. Mr Adler's report card idea is right up there with Jack's christmas tree dunes, if that is stronger and smarter, we better run for higher ground....
