Fire Strikes West Penn Home

Firefighters battle "labor intensive" blaze early Monday morning.

A father and son escaped harm after a fire broke out at their Long Beach home early Monday morning. The fire travelled through a wall from the basement to the attic at the home, at 628 W. Penn Street, and firefighters were able to control it within about 45 minutes after receiving a call at 5:21 a.m., said Richard Corbett, chief of the Long Beach Fire Department. “It was a very labor intensive operation,” said Corbett, who explained that firefighters had to rip apart many walls in order to stop the spread of the fire. He noted that the home, possibly built in the 1920s or 1930s, is made mostly of wood and plaster and without any construction or materials to block the fire’s path. “The son was sleeping in a second floor apartment when he …

Long Beach to Audit Payouts to Police Duo

Police union president says cops are not required to negotiate different plan.

The City of Long Beach will audit the retirement payments of two police officers – Lt. Jim McCormack and Det. Sgt. Howard Domitz – that are expected to cost a collective $1,094,324 million, but the city’s police union contends the officers are contractually entitled to receive that money.    Both officers, who joined the Long Beach Police Department in 1978 and retired this year, are granted money for unused sick, vacation and compensatory time under the city’s payout retirement plan, and city officials plan to ask the officers to take retirement payments over three years instead of the typical 60 days in an effort to reduce substantial future retirement payouts, according to Newsday. Councilman John McLaughlin said: “Auditing something …

@ occupylongbeach - you are correct; the Police Department hasn’t seen a contract since 2008, which is pathetic. You’re also correct that they haven’t filled the positions of the people who just retired. However, all that retired were upper management and for a department that was too top-heavy, it wouldn’t make sense to fill those positions. It also made no sense to continually promote Fire …   more ›

Missing Georgia Teens Found

Jacob Mitchell and Samantha Aldana are safe and will return home soon.

Two teens from Georgia who ran away one week ago and reportedly stayed in Long Beach have been found and will soon return home. Jacob Mitchell, 15, and his girlfriend, Samantha Aldana, 17, who were last seen on April 27 when Samantha reportedly took her parent’s car, were located by authorities, according to the Long Beach Police Department. “They have been located,” Patti Salerno, a LBPD public information officer, wrote in an email to Patch on Friday. "They are safe and we are working on getting them back to Georgia.” Sgt. Eric Cregeen, the LBPD’s chief PIO officer, was unavailable Friday to provide details about the missing persons case.  Jacob’s mother, Katricia Mitchell of Lawrenceville, Georgia, who created a Facebook page Finding …

Missing Georgia Boy May Be in Long Beach

Teen was said to be safe at relatives home but ran away again.

The mother of a missing boy from Georgia received good news that he was safe in Long Beach, only to learn later that he had run away again. Katricia Mitchell of Lawrenceville, Georgia, created a Facebook page, Finding Jacob, to help locate her 15-year-old son, Jacob Terry Mitchell, who has been missing since last week. On the page, Mitchell writes that her son and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Samantha Aldana, were with the girl's aunt and uncle’s home in Long Beach. Just hours later, though, Mitchell posted that the two were on the run again. "Sam's aunt gave them keys, after having taken the keys away and ensuring their safety, to get belongings out of car and they took off," said the concerned mother on Facebook. The two teens have been …

Long Beach Homeless Man Charged with Burglaries

LBPD nabs suspect who allegedly broke into two gas stations.

A homeless man from Long Beach was arrested and charged with burglary after he led police on a chase through residential yards Friday. According to Nassau County Police Department detectives, Ronald Miller, 34, was wanted for burglaries at two locations last year, and was known to have an open New York State Parole Warrant. Policed allege that on Oct. 31, 2011, Miller entered Shamrock gas station, at 17 Merrick Rd. in Baldwin, and removed a laptop computer, cigarettes and cash on; and on Nov. 6, 2011, he broke a glass garage door and entered a BP gas station, at 160 Davison Ave., in Oceanside, where no losses were reported. During both burglaries, the defendant left evidence at the scenes that linked him to the crimes, police said. County…

Why are we paying 2 Lieutenant Detectives when this has NEVER been done before at the tax payers expense. The democrats had to reward the PBA president with a big two step promotion during a financial emergency. This was a back room deal that we are paying for. Open honest government.
