The Long Beach Fire Department is among the busiest on Long Island, responding to more than 4,000 calls annually. TheMore LBFD headquarters are located at City Hall, at 1 West Chester Street. There are two other firehouses: Station 1 at Maple Boulevard and East Park Avenue and Station 2 at Indiana Avenue and West Park Avenue. Scott Kemins is chief of the department, which has 150 volunteer firefighters, 27 career firefighters and 23 part-time dispatchers. The department has five engine trucks, three ambulances, a 100-foot ladder tower and 95-foot ladder tower, as well as a water rescue unit with a Jet-ski, boat and pick-up truck.

Long Beach became a city in 1922, 10 years after it was established as an incorporated village. Today, it is one ofMore only two cities in Nassau County (the other is Glen Cove) and has several departments, including police, fire, sanitation, water/sewer, lifeguards, zoning, parks and recreation and more. The city operates with a five-member council that appoints a city manager who oversees the daily operations of the departments. The city council meets at City Hall, located at 1 W. Chester St., the first and third Tuesday of each month.
