Long Beach Tops Lynbrook in Boys Lax Playoffs

Marine win sets up date with Plainedge at Hofstra.

The Long Beach boys lacrosse team have made it to Hofstra in every year of head coach Jim Kasper's tenure, and this season will be no different. The Marines' 9-6 victory over the Lynbrook Owls on Friday night at Long Beach Middle School sent Long Beach back to the Nassau Class B quarterfinals.  "That's our goal every year," Kasper said of playing at Hofstra during the playoffs. As the first half wound down, it looked like the Marines would sail to the Hofstra date. Connor Sofield's second goal of the evening gave Long Beach a 4-1 lead with 5:58 left in the second quarter.  The goal was Long Beach's fourth unanswered score after Lynbrook had taken an early 1-0 lead. The Owls managed to grab two more goals near the end of second quarter but …

Teen Suicide Prevention Campaign Comes to Long Beach

Iron Gate Cares Foundation brings "Let It Go" Campaign to MLK Center.

A parent whose child committed suicide and a young adult who tried to commit suicide will speak at the Martin Luther King Center May 5 in order to spread awareness and understanding about this serious issue. The occasion is the Iron Gate Cares Foundation’s “Let It Go” campaign that educates young people and parents about prevention of teen suicide, an event that comes days before National Prevention Week (May 20-26). While Iron Gate typically conducts various charity events from toy drives to candle walks and brings its speakers to Long Island schools, Saturday’s event, from 3 to 8 p.m., will be the first of its kind for the foundation. Iron Gate and One Man Army Marketing & Promotions will present the Long Island Celebrity Charity …

Long Beach Native Excels in Tennis at Wake Forest

Danny Kreyman, a junior, will be heading with his team to the ACC Championships.

In his third season with the Wake Forest University men’s tennis team, junior Danny Kreyman, a Long Beach native, continues to assist his team in both doubles and singles, while keeping up with his classes as an economics major. He will head with his team to the ACC Championships, according to Wake Forest University’s newspaper, The Old Gold and Black. Kreyman takes the top two singles positions, in addition to his doubles play with sophomore partner Adam Lee. He was initially drawn to Wake Forest because of its academic reputation and “better athletic competition.” Wanting to attend a strong academic school, Kreyman said that tennis helped him “get into a better school than my grades alone.” Kreyman added his opinion on how tennis is …

Long Beach Native Larry Brown Returns to College Coaching

Will lead SMU in Big East Conference.

Long Beach native and longtime NBA coach Larry Brown has return to coaching college hoops after nearly a quarter century. A graduated from Long Beach High School, Brown on Monday was introduced as the men’s basketball coach as SMU, the Dallas school that has not won an NCAA tournament game since Brown won a national title at Kansas in 1988, according to the Associated Press. About his return to coaching, the 71-year-old Brown said: "When I look in the mirror, I get kind of scared. But inside, I feel like I can do this forever." In December 2010, Brown resigned from his post as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. The Hall of Fame coach has more than 1,100 career wins and is one of the all-time greats in league history. As a coach, Larry Brown hasn't always experienced unmitigated success (his tenure with the Knicks being one example), but he's old-school in the mold of Red Holzman and one of the best minds in the game. Like Holzman, Brown is as much a teacher as coach, so returning to college probably suits him best at this stage of his career. By the time they turn pro most basketball players don't respond to …   more ›

Long Beach Speed Skater Races Against the Clocks

48-year-old Jacki Munzel eyes the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Fifteen seconds stands between Jacki Munzel and the Winter Olympic trials. But the speed skater from Long Beach faces roadblocks: her age and, unlike her dominant Dutch counterparts, the inability to train regularly at a regulation-sized oval. “I’m skating against people that are skating six days a week and I’m not,” said Munzel, who at 48-years-old has returned to the ice after hitting a barrier. Her fastest time in the 3,000 meters is 4:32, but to qualify for the trials possibly as late as one month before the Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February 2014, she must shave her time down to 4:17.   Instead of trekking 300 miles to the nearest oval in Lake Placid, Munzel trains daily either at her West End home on a Plexiglas slide board to …

Leading up to the festival on Friday night, News 12 featured a segment about the documentary [paid link]. Coach Paige did such an awesome job with the Pee Wee boys. It was my son Nick's first time playing basektball and he learned so much from her. He enjoyed every minutes of it! Thank you so much Coach Paige (who doesn't even have a kid on the team - to give up her free time to teach the game of bb to these boys! Awesome.) I must also comment that it was fantastic to see all the women coaches make …   more ›
