Democrats Sweep City Council Election

Mandel, Goggin, Eramo top three vote-getters; Tepper retains judge's seat.

Incumbents Scott Mandel and Eileen Goggin and newcomer Anthony Eramo, all Democrats, wracked up the most votes for the three open seats in the Long Beach City Council election Tuesday.

With all 24 precincts reporting in Long Beach, Mandel had the highest vote total, 4,470, while Goggin garnered 4,451 and Eramo collected 4,319 in the at-large election. With their victories, Mandel and Goggin captured four-year terms, while Eramo won a two-year term.

Among the other candidates in the field of six, Janna Jachniewicz received 2,851 votes, while Michael Franceschini and Damian Walsh got 2,796 and 2,831 votes, respectively. The challengers were all first-time candidates running as Republican-backed Clean Slate Independents. 

With the victories, Democrats will increase their control of the council, from 4-1 majority to 5-0. The other current council members are Democrats Fran Adelson and Len Torres, and Republican John McLaughlin, who chose not to seek reelection.

City Court Judge

In the race for City Court judge, Judge Roy Tepper, the Democratic incumbent, defeated Theodore Hommel, a Republican-back challenger, by a vote of  3,958 to 3,401.
