Long Beach Begins Boardwalk Rebuilding with Ceremony

Sen. Schumer attends groundbreaking event at Riverside beach Saturday.

The City of Long Beach held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new boardwalk Saturday, after the former structure was significantly damaged during Hurricane Sandy in October. An estimated 1,000 people attended the ceremony at Riverside Boulevard beach, which was attended by the Long Beach City Council, City Manager Jack Schnirman, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who rode his bike from Brooklyn to the ceremony, and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, D-Long Beach.

The city signed a $44.2 million contract with Grace Industries, the Plainview-based firm awarded the bid to build the tropical ipe wood and concrete walkway, on April 16, marking the start of a project that has a 210-timeline for completion.
