Repairs Stop at New York Sports Club

City says dispute between gym and landlord led to halt.

The rebuilding of Long Beach's lone East End gym came to a halt last week.

The City of Long Beach issued a stop work order at New York Sports Club, at 265 E. Park Ave., on April 2. The building sustained flooding during Hurricane Sandy in October and contractors were repairing and reconstructing the facility when the building department posted the order on the gym’s boarded-up front door last Tuesday.

Scott Kemins, the city’s building commissioner, said the stop work order was issued based on complaints from New York Sports Club that the landlord wasn’t making the repairs properly.

“We issued the order until we can go in with the owner of the building and inspect the work that is going on to make sure it is being done properly,” Kemins told Patch last Friday. “They do have proper permits and licensed contractors. There is an underlying landlord-tenant issue here that will end up being a civil matter.”

The city didn't provide the name of the landlord. New York Sports Club did not return a call to comment for this story.
