Sweets to Replace Parties at West End Vacancy

Former tenant says his return to Long Beach is uncertain.

The crippling impact of Hurricane Sandy forced a party planner to move from Long Beach and an ice cream shop is slated to fill the vacancy in his wake.

Barry Brown, who owned B.B. Star Productions at 966 W. Beech St. for 12 years, took his hurricane-damaged business to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, after the October storm.

“I got wiped out of business completely,” Brown said about this former storefront, located between Tennessee Avenue and New Hampshire Street.

An ice cream, yogurt and desserts shop is expected to move in. The owners are scheduled to seek waivers for parking requirements at the Long Beach City Council meeting April 16. The shop will share the house-like building with Beech Street Taxi, which recently relocated from 1046 W. Beech to the unit formerly occupied by Sterrer Realty, which was also wiped out in the storm.

The building's owner is listed on the city council's agenda as Long Beach Realty Corp., which has a Forest Hills address.

When asked if he has plans to return to the barrier island, Brown expressed uncertainty.

“That whole area has to rebuild in order for me to come back,” he said. “It’s a very bad situation there right now. It’s dead zone, right now.”
