National Grid agrees to perform street improvements at no cost to city.

Gas and electrical companies on Tuesday continued to perform work on Maryland Avenue, a block that will undergo repavement once their projects are completed.

City Manager Jack Schnirman announced at last week's West End Neighbors Civic Association meeting that the Long Island Power Authority is running its power lines underground in the West End, which in part will substantially reduce the chances of lost power during storms, and National Grid is installing gas mains in the neighborhood.

National Grid has agreed to repave the street surface on Maryland at the request of, and at no cost to, the City of Long Beach, Schnirman said.

"It's not the city doing it, and we're not paying for it either," he said, noting that the curbs and sidewalks will not be part of the work.

Schnirman said that as the companies perform the same upgrades on other streets, the city will request that they repave those streets as well.
