Memorial Boardwalk Benches Making Their Way Back

Boardwalk-goers in Long Beach once again have a solid place to sit and look out at the Atlantic.

The more than 700 memorial benches that lined the former boardwalk, before Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged the structure last October, have started to reappear on the new walkway. Last week the city started to reinstall the benches, bolting them down to the concrete edges of the walkway between Long Beach and Riverside boulevards.

Before the city demolished the wrecked 2.2-mile boardwalk earlier this year, the memorial benches were stored away and refurbished, City Manager Jack Schnirman said when the first section of the new boardwalk was opened in late July.

Each bench features plaques that families purchased to memorialize a loved one. Jeff Singer, an Oceanside resident who regularly uses the boardwalk, created a guide to the memorial benches, called “Reflections.”
