Second Stop-Work Order Issued at Jackson Hotel

State Department of Labor tests asbestos at work site.

The former Jackson Hotel was slapped with a second stop-work order, this time due to conditions with asbestos as workers clean out and renovate the building at 405 E Park Ave. in Long Beach.

The New York State Department of Labor issued the stop-work order and took some samples to run tests on Aug. 10, said Scott Kemins, the city’s building commissioner. He noted that the owners of the hotel had already obtained the required asbestos survey from a licensed company.

“They are in the process of working this out with the Department of Labor," Kemin said. "Once this is cleared up their permit for interior demolition will be issued."

The Jackson Hotel was sold in June to a corporation called 405 East Broadway LLC, and co-owner, David Kadosh, said that the building will be renovated and renamed the Long Beach Hotel.

On Aug. 6, the city issued the first stop-work order at the hotel when it was discovered that an electrician was not present to oversee some of the renovations. While Kemins said he was waiting for a licensed electrician to file papers with the city before work could begin again, Kadosh said his electrician was on vacation and could not file the paperwork on time.

Kemins said previously that the new owners were working with the Department of Labor in case any asbestos needed to be removed because the building, constructed in 1927, is so antiquated.
