VIDEOS: Retaining Wall on the Rise at Magnolia Beach-Park

Playground rebuild set for May 18.

A construction crew was busy building the skeleton of a retaining wall on the beach that abuts Magnolia Park on Wednesday. The work represents the early stages of a large-scale project to rebuild Long Beach’s 2.2-mile boardwalk, as well as a separate one-day project to revive the playground, both of which were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy in October.

The city hired Grace Industries, a Plainview-based company, to construct the $44 million boardwalk, which will stand 17-feet above sea level and feature a wave break wall to prevent or mitigate similar damages in future storms. That wall, which is separate from the retaining wall going up at Magnolia, adds about $6 million to the project’s price tag.

Meanwhile, Magnolia Park is slated for a one-day rebuild on May 18. KaBoom!, a non-profit dedicated to creating playgrounds nationwide, will spearhead the project along with JetBlue Airways, which will provide the bulk its funding. They will partner with the City of Long Beach and Surf For All, another nonprofit, in the rebuilding efforts. Visit the community-created Facebook page Magnolia Park Rebuild for updates.
