Schumer to FEMA: Extend Deadline for Sandy-Related Insurance Challenges

Senator to hold press conference at Long Beach home Tuesday morning.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer will hold a press conference at a Long Beach home Tuesday morning to call on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to “issue a clear and immediate ruling that would have the effect of extending the statute of limitations for [Hurricane] Sandy victims to challenge inadequate flood insurance settlements in court,” according to a press release from the senator’s office.

The press conference, which will be held at the home of Rena Bonne, at 323 E. Hudson Street, at 11:45 a.m., will address current FEMA guidelines, under which “families have only one year from the date they received the first written response from their insurer challenge the insurer’s determination of their claim amount and that day is rapidly approaching, as some homeowners got their first response within a month or two of the storm,” the release states.

“Schumer will say FEMA should not start the clock on the one-year statute of limitations until all administrative appeals have been completed and the homeowner has received a final determination from the insurer,” the release continues.

The press conference will include Long Island families who remain unsure of the amount of aid they are owed, “and therefore may be denied legal recourse due to them under statute and by the terms of their insurance policy if the relief Schumer seeks is not granted,” the release states.
