Larry Elovich, Former Democratic Leader and Attorney, dies at 77

Services to be held at Temple Emanu-el on Monday.

Lawrence Elovich, the former Long Beach Democratic Committee chairman, past president of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and prominent attorney in town, died on Friday after a battle with cancer. He was 77.

Elovich is survived by his wife, Helen Mirel; his three daughters, Lisa, Lauree and Lynn; and nine grandchildren, and is remembered at a respected attorney, political advisor, as well as a doting husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, according to the Long Beach Herald. "Larry," as he was known to most people, was like a legend in Long Beach, said his close friend Stanley Fleishman:

"There are many people in this world who go by one name: Cher, Madonna ... and then there was Larry. When you said his name everyone knew who you were talking about. [Larry] made Long Beach the strongest political Democratic party in Nassau County. But he was more than just a local politician —he's known throughout the state and respected by both parties."
