Elderly Pedestrian Killed on East Park Avenue

Silvia Zucker, 85, was fatally injured as she was walking across the street in the rain Tuesday.

A motorist driving on the slick roads of a rain-drenched Long Beach Tuesday struck and killed an 85-year-old woman, police said.

According to Long Beach Police Department, a 21-year-old Long Beach man was driving westbound on East Park Avenue, between Roosevelt and Neptune Boulevards, when he hit the elderly woman as she was crossing the street northbound from the parking mall around 1 p.m.

“He sees her and locks up the breaks, skids on the wet pavement and strikes the elderly woman,” said Sgt. Eric Cregeen, the department’s public information officer.

“There’s no criminality,” Cregeen said. “We did our investigation at the scene. There’s nothing criminal about it. It was just a situation where he locked up his breaks on a wet pavement and slid right into her.”

Cregeen said that it appeared the woman was heading to one of the stores on East Park between Roosevelt and Neptune.
