Deadline for Basic STAR Property Tax Exemption Nears

Homeowners must file by Dec. 31.

Written by Rosemary Leonetti/Syntax

All homeowners receiving a Basic STAR property tax exemption must register by Dec. 31, 2013 with the New York State Tax Department to receive the exemption in 2014 and thereafter.

The registration requirement is not satisfied by the homeowner’s original application to the Nassau County Assessor’s Office. The STAR exemption is available for owner-occupied primary residences where the combined income of the resident owners and spouses is $500,000 or less.

To register, go to the New York State Tax Department’s website at www.tax.ny.gov. If you do not have Internet access, you can register by calling 518-457-2036.

Senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption are not affected by this new requirement. In order to continue to receive the Enhanced STAR exemption, seniors must continue to apply annually or participate in the Income Verification Program.
