School-Library Board Elections, Budget Round-Ups

Voters to head to the polls Tuesday.

Long Beach School District residents head to the polls Tuesday to vote for four candidates, one incumbent and three newcomers, who are running for a single seat on the Board of Education, as well as two candidates vying for one seat on the Long Beach Library Board of Trustees. Voters will also either approve or oppose proposed budget for both the school district and library.

School Board Candidates:

President of the Board of Education, Roy Lester, 63, is an attorney who seeks a fourth term on the board. He is a longtime resident of Long Beach.
Matthew Adler, 38, is a math teacher at Seaford High School and a parent of two young children, one of which is enrolled in the district. Adler, who has lived in Long Beach for eleven years, is a first-time candidate.

Jes Bellsey, 33, is a former substitute teacher in the Long Beach district who works as a trade show and special projects coordinator. Bellsey is a first-time candidate.

School Budget

The school district’s proposed budget for 2013-14 is $123.7 million, which the Board of Education voted to adopt in April. Library Board Candidates

Library Budget

The library proposes a $3.4 million budget for 2013-14, which the board voted to adopt in March. The spending plan represents a 0 percent or $27,193 increase and 1 percent tax increase over the current budget.
