West School Competing for $75K Prize

The Sandy-damaged elementary school was recently named a finalist in a national green building competition.

Sandy-battered West Elementary School has been named a top 10 finalist in the Green School Makeover Competition and could win a $75,000 cash grand prize.

The winner will also receive a $5,000 Office Depot gift card, technical assistance from Global Green USA’s team of green schools/green building experts. Nine finalist schools will receive Office Depot gift cards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500.

The following information was included with West's entry:

West Elementary School was devastated by several feet of rancid floodwaters during Superstorm Sandy and still remains unopened. The school hopes to turn a negative into a positive and use the funds to turn the hardships of Sandy into the possibility of reconstructing a greener, healthier, and more energy efficient school. Green upgrades would instill hope once again in the community as well as in the children who have bounced between other overcrowded elementary schools since the storm.

Restoration of West School, the Long Beach School District building hit hardest in the storm, is ongoing and its reopening remains in limbo. Students have been relocated to other schools during the rebuilding process.

"I am very appreciative of all the help that members of the school community have made to rebuild West," Superintendent David Weiss told Patch.
