Long Beach Boys Lacrosse Honoring Memory of Former Player

Marines program start new tradition handing out number five jersey worn by Corey Lovrich before his death of colon cancer at age 21 last year.

Nearly a year after the tragic death of former Long Beach lacrosse standout Corey Lovrich, the Marines program he starred in has a found a unique way to honor his memory.

Lovrich, who played college lacrosse at Jacksonville University after graduating Long Beach High School in 2009, died last June at age 21 following a yearlong battle with colon cancer.  The Long Beach lacrosse program Lovrich was co-captain of his senior season has now decided to pay tribute to him by handing out his number five jersey to a deserving Marine player each season. The Marine player selected to wear Lovrich’s number will be one that best exemplifies his work ethic and character.

The first Long Beach player picked to honor Lovrich during the 2013 season is senior defenseman Jake Brown, who is committed to play collegiate lacrosse at Army. Brown stood with Lovrich’s parents Romano and Jeannette along with his brother Bryan during halftime of Tuesday night’s game against Wantagh in a ceremony announcing the new jersey tradition.

Lovrich earned All-County honors his junior and senior lacrosse seasons at Long Beach. He also played soccer and basketball for the Marines.
