Photos: Memorial Day at Boardwalk-less Long Beach

Sun-worshipers, surfers, volleyball players and other assorted beach-goers try to make the most of a summer without the 2.2-mile walkway.

With a wave break wall on the rise signaling a new boardwalk is coming, sun-worshipers, surfers, volleyball players and other assorted beach-goers hit the sands in Long Beach on Memorial Day.

The South Shore city is trying to make the most of the summer after Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged the 2.2-mile walkway that is its main attraction. As one example, food trucks were lined up in a makeshift court area at Riverside beach, with diners seated at picnic tables under palm trees, all of which will remain a constant throughout the season.

Following the Memorial Day parade Monday morning, a cool shore met beach-goers, as temperatures climbed only into 60s. It seemed just a few surfers wanted to brave the Atlantic, as fishermen cast their lines in the ocean and others strolled along the shore — or along the sidewalk on Broadway, where bikers took to the street alongside them, as they all await sections of the new boardwalk to open later this summer.

Still, some areas of the beach showed signs of Sandy’s aftermath, with broken concrete and other debris still evident at certain entrances.
