PHOTOS: Long Beach Six Months Since Sandy

Snapshots of the city as it continues to rebuild from the devastating storm.

Monday marks six months after Hurricane Sandy raged against Long Beach on Oct. 29, thoroughly flooding the barrier island from ocean to bay while carrying millions of cubic yards of sand and raw sewage, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses in its path. The cost of the storm to the city’s infrastructure, including the 2.2-mile boardwalk, is estimated at $250 million.

With the approach of the half-year anniversary last week, Patch photographers set out to capture the state of the city that reveals itself to be rebuilding yet, in many ways, still in disrepair. While some residents repair and elevate their homes, others live in trailers in lots where their storm-damaged houses were knocked down. Although several streets have been beautified with new flowers and plants, dumpsters and portable storage units dot many blocks around town. As surfers catch waves and joggers take to running along the shore, a demolished boardwalk and neighboring playground await rebuilding.

Check out these scenes and many others in post-Sandy Long Beach in today’s photo gallery.
